Review of Toy Story 2 (1999) by Cj W — 08 Aug 2014
Toy Story 2 is a great film, that is as good as the first one, and to some it may be better. I do think it is better crafted than the first, which was at times a little experimental, but that was expected.
This however, is more mature than both of Pixar's first two films, it explores darker themes of abandonment, mortality, manipulation, and somewhat studies the psychology of the characters, while also continuing to its exploration of the more light-hearted themes of the first one.
The screenplay truly is masterfully written, it has sharp, emotionally charged dramatic dialogue to go along with its witty, and often hilarious comedy. It truly does rank with the best of Pixar's outstanding screenplays.
But the animation becomes more convincing and just as cleverly assembled as the first one, and the images are just as memorable. However, the whole film doesn't have quite the same charm as Toy Story, but I believe it is just as well executed, and probably better written than the original.
It is honestly hard though to choose which is better, because they both are among the greatest things ever to hit animation, and paved the way for Toy Story 3, which is the best of the 3 and one of the greatest animated films of all time.
