Review of Toy Story 2 (1999) by Davidtejada — 05 Feb 2019
“Toy Story 2 provides almost the same quality as the predecessor with more laughs and open character introductions, the problem with the 1999’s film is that you spot something is missing and the worst of all is that you could not tell what is it”.
There is no doubt that the Toy Story saga is a must-see movie for young viewers and it definitely represents the childhood epoch, but when qualifying the three (soon the four) flicks I daresay that something is blank with the second one, the thing is that it is difficult to reveal what is the missing feature. Therefore, is crucial to asses every single inch of the movie to fully comprehend it. To begin with, if the first instalment we saw the importance of being authentic and becoming who we wanted to be no matter other opinions (taking into account Woody’s emotional speech towards Buzz) in the second we saw the opposite when Woody lets himself be influenced by the other’s opinions (Stinky Pete, Jessie, Bullseye) and become a collectible doll, as you can see, it melts the ideas he defended at the very beginning. Then, the sequel provides good laughs and some pop-culture references, sometimes it loses its focus. For example, they key point of doing such a dangerous one-way trip was to save Woody but meanwhile these folks were having fun with Barbie world, a new Buzz Lightyear, cowboy’s on TV and I-am-your-father subplot which is definitely funny but also pointless… whereas the first Toy Story movie knew how to balance both sides without falling on exaggeration. Briefly, it is a little flaw, sadly a flaw is a flaw. Now, overall the movie was perfect! Just read the previous review of the movie and you’ll notice how this movie didn’t change the formula.
