Review of Toy Story 2 (1999) by Daenerys S — 12 Jun 2014
Pixar's best sequel. I liked this even more than the first. It had the charm and humor of the original, with the returning likes of all of the toys from the first, while introducing a lot of fun and new characters, including Pixar's first surprise villain character.
It did a great job at picking up after the first movie. It's still hard to believe this was meant to be a straight to VHS movie back then, because it still feels like a theater quality movie in my eyes.
This movie really expanded the toy's adventuring through a giant world they're not meant to adventure through. In the first, they mostly were in either a house, a house across the yard, or riding in a car, or on an RC car even.
But this movie took it even further, this movie wasn't about 2 toys returning to their owner, it's about many toys trying to get back 1 toy, from locations they're not even aware of. In the first movie, their missions were pretty familiar, it's like they knew where they were, and where to go, the only problem was escaping from a mad kid's house.
In Toy Story 2, they chased down a missing friend, while having no idea where the place they're looking for is, which causes them to travel through many bizarre places for a group of toys to encounter, like speeding highway traffic, a giant toy store, an elevator shaft of a giant apartment tower, and even an air port, and luggage cargo of an air plane.
It did a great job at giving what made the first one special, and it managed to expand it, without going too far. It also through in some funny movie nods to the likes of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Jurassic Park, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, and more.
