Review of Toy Story (1995) by Corinna O — 12 Aug 2015
I have loved this movie since I was a kid. I remember watching it on VHS, with the adverts such as 101 Dalmatians released on video before the feature. As soon as the old Disney logo came up, I knew what was coming. This time around, I had the new one which was ok but I still miss the old Disney.
The songs brought life to this movie. It tells some of the scenes in a perfect way from strange things are happening to the most memorable that should have got an Oscar, You've Got A Friend In Me. Randy Newman was the perfect choice. Toy Story is simple yet affective. I don't know how Pixar thought about this 20 years ago. Woody's speech to Buzz when he has given up is so moving, it almost had me in tears. It made me appreciate the toys that I had in the past and if I ever have kids, I would let them watch this and show them how important their toys are.
Tom Hanks is the perfect voice for Woody. Every time I hear him, I always think of this character, even till this day. Tim Allen is great as Buzz Lightyear. Come to think of it, all of the characters voices are perfect. They are no other actors that can do what they do. I never realised that there are so much adult humour and most of them are from Mr Potato Head. I mean, kiss ass. I never understood that as a kid but I do now. This is one of the most quotable movies I have ever watched. I knew the 'You are a Toy' dialogue of by heart. I remember the 'can't, can' scene. I knew the line, ' this isn't flying, this is falling with style'. I even knew the dialogue for Woody when he reveals to Sid that toys are alive plus that is my favourite scene. Come to think of it, most of my memorable lines are from Woody and it makes sense. This is sort of Woody's movie because he is dealing with the fact that he isn't the favourite anymore. This may be something that you deal with if you have siblings or a group of friends. When another comes into the group, you are not the favourite anymore and this may be hard to deal with but at the end of the day, you would need them more than you ever did.
I have spoken a lot about Toy Story because I love it so much. I have given this a 9/10 and I am shocked about how much it holds up after so long.
P.S. I liked the way that they shoe horned toy companies when Mr Potato Head and Rex mention the brand that they have come from like Mattel and Playschool. There was also references to Mickey Mouse with the big click watch on the wall as well as the Shining pattern at Sid's house and books named after their previous shorts behind Woody when he is trying to have a meeting. On the move, they were also listen to Hakuna Matata on the way to their new house. This is from a Disney film released a year before this one. Also, Toy Story is still part of Disney otherwise they wouldn't have been allowed to use anything associated with Mathew company.
