Review of Toy Story (1995) by A S — 22 Sep 2013
'A cowboy doll is profoundly threatened and jealous when a new spaceman figure supplants him as top toy in a boy's room.' Thank you, IMDB. However, I believe that everybody knows there is more to it than just that.
Toy Story is one of those films that has stuck with me all my life, one of those films that I know all the lines to, and one of those films that I watch regularly even now. It's also Pixar's debut film, and their best, despite their other flawless animated efforts such as 'Monsters Inc', 'Finding Nemo' and 'UP'. When I was younger I would watch this constantly, I literally wore out the video tape which my mum had to eventually replace.
This film, in my opinion, is a reflection of childhood; when we're children our toys come alive, we're not just playing with a piece of manufactured plastic or wood, the toys are literally given personalities, the way this is shown through beautiful animation and wonderful voicework is perfect. This fantastic film appeals not only to children but adults as well, in many ways it can be seen as an adult film, this is because it successfully projects a deep nostalgia of childhood onto the adult mind.
A entire universe has been created from this exhilarating story, using only a few bedrooms and very little of the outside world. This film is the brightest jewel on Pixar's shiny crown and is easily the greatest animated film of all time, I could never praise it enough.
My Rating: 5/5.
