Review of Tower (2016) by Lara D — 09 Jun 2017
This movie is a memorial documentary about the shooting at University of Texas in 1966. It's an exceptionally well done artistic, yet respectful, piece. The rotoscope animation is of course done with actors, but I think taking the time to draw over these scenes takes away the cheap feeling that can come from an re-enactment and helps position the film in an eye catching light.
The multiple voices and perspectives that we hear from really drive home how frightening this was for those people and the lasting scar that it left. There's even an artistic choice made about 3/4 through the movie that shifts the narrative subtly from the distant look of art and re-enactments into a real and touching reality.
There's so much good in this movie. I highly recommend everyone check it out.
