Review of Towelhead (2008) by Raul B — 08 Sep 2008
Boo boo and more boo. Good thing the screening was free! It might seem unfair to compare this to the great American Beauty, which Ball also penned, but how can you not, especially when this feels like rehashed material (despite being an adaptation of a book) given the similarities in themes of girls' teenage life and coming of age in suburbia? It's clear that this is missing the hand of a great director with vision--Alan Ball is not it.
Others praise this film for the "disturbing" and "difficult " subject matter--but if you've ever watched Todd Solondz' films, this just feels like a heavy-handed, contrived, and, dare I say it, even trite and feeble effort at a dark comedy that falls way short of anything resembling greatness, especially when you compare this to the masterpiece that is "Happiness", or even "Welcome to the Dollhouse.
" Have a Todd Solondz movie night instead of watching this.
