Review of Towelhead (2008) by Jim A — 22 Dec 2008
When I first heard about this movie I was excited to see it if only because Six Feet Under is my favorite tv show of all time, I loved American Beauty and Aaron Eckhart is the man. Most likely, if I had watched this by myself rather than my girlfriend I would have enjoyed it more. However, through the entire movie I had this feeling like she burning holes in the back of my head with her eyes thinking 'What the hell is wrong with you that you actually wanted to see this?'.
I don't really consider myself to be a prude or anything but something about 13 year olds exploring their budding sexuality in full view on screen bothers me. I mean, one or two scenes I'm ok with but the constant onslaught of racial slurs and sexual references was a bit much for me. Add statutory rape into the mix and you have completely lost me. I understand and respect what Ball was trying to say with this movie but it was just a bit much for me. I mean, how many times do we need to show this 13 year old having an orgasm? Once, fine. Twice, erm...ok. Three? Four? Five? Unnecessary.
Two stars for Summer Rishil who really was quite good in this role and for Peter Macdissi who also hit the nail on the head with his performance as her father.
