Review of Towelhead (2008) by Peter F — 09 Jan 2009
The movie had it's moments, showing the awkwardness & the brutality of growing up as a Lebanese pre-teen in middle America. I could relate to Jasira's behavior towards her sexual identity in how she feels the need to be like the porn stars she sees in the magazines, given the strict environment that she lives in.
It's a great coming of age story that anyone who's felt alone & confused when faced with the reality of life could relate to. However, I don't think this movie did much progress for the discrimination against Middle Easterns in America, it may have started a discussion among viewers but it didn't reach a milestone.
But like Alicia Erian said in the DVD special feature discussion, she's not sure if movies & books have the power to change the world but it opens up a discussion. I don't think this is Alan Ball's best work but it's worth checking out.
Oh & Summer Bishil is gorgeous in this, totally resembles Madonna's daughter Lourdes Leon.
