Review of Towelhead (2008) by Jordan T — 08 Mar 2009
A lot better than expected, this film tries tackle themes that still considered taboo in most households and even societies. It complicates the matter by embedding the issues that have plagued humanity since almost the beginning of history inside notions that are more modern - racism, cross-cultural relationships, sexuality-taken-for-granted, and so on. And it cuts across this mess without mercy, without a care for aesthetics, and without apologies.
Some of the scenes are too well rounded, some too pleasantly concluded - there's no doubt that art house viewers will still recognize this as a mainstream film (or a "shocking" film as perceived by a mainstream viewer) - but this may be a good thing.
