Review of Towelhead (2008) by Anna-Stiina L — 18 Apr 2009
What is the collective noun for paedophiles? I would google it but the Feds monitor that sort of thing apparently. A ring? Anyway let's just say that the central protagonist had a veritable swarm of Humbert Humberts vying for her 'affections'.
Throw a neglectful mother and an abusive father into the mix, beat until tender, allow to set for 2 hours and you've got 'Towelhead'. I think this was basically a pretty good film, but I found it cringy and uncomfortable, and had to remind myself not to blame the victim, who vacillated between very childish and very adult-like behaviour.
Luckily Toni Collette saved the day! Toni Collette is ace. Towelhead has good all round acting and direction and my favourite comment came from the the little fat girl who says "if you do what a racist tells you, then you're a racist too".
Too right.
