Review of Towelhead (2008) by Paula L — 01 Jul 2009
I love everything else that Alan Ball has done but he is off the mark with this film. It's not darkly funny, it's darkly sad. It's kind of like a "Are You There God, It's Me, Margaret" film without the sensitivity or insight.
The DVD extra discussing the film spent most of the time yammering on about the title of the film, and the star herself didn't even seem to grasp what the movie was about. I guess it's open to interpretation, but I think there was a message here as blatant as an after-school special.
The discussion was to foster understanding, but it actually just highlighted how the film failed on all fronts. The white liberal neighbors being the heroes of the story also makes this film really hit the crapper.
Eh. On a positive note, I did think the acting was good, and the film looked good.
