Review of Towelhead (2008) by River W — 13 Aug 2009
It had it's fair share of forced lines, cringe worthy cliches, and overly dramatic scenes, but with such a touchy subject, excellent characters and realistically confused protagonist, it hit a sweet spot.
Jasira's father is a self-centered racist who is strict, unforgiving, and misunderstanding of his daughter. Their neighbor, Aaron Eckhart makes a terrifically creepy pervert, even if his Texan accent is a little off. Jasira (Summer Bishil) is a great fit for a 13 year old confused about sex.
This movie can be a bit uncomfortable at times, but it's always on target as a coming of age sexual exploration disaster, as well as an archetype exploitation that ends with (bleh) everything ok and everyone changed. It had a little too many apologies for it's subject, but I enjoyed it, and strong characters carry it a long way.
