Review of Tout Va Bien (1972) by Jim C — 23 Sep 2007
As good as "Weekend" and probally the best personal essay film I have ever seen. Many reviewing it are saying that it has no story and that the politics are dated. I think with some thought you can easily apply what the people are saying to today.
The whole Maoist/Marxist thing is a problem though but you need to consider that 40 years ago Marx idea's still seemed plausible and Mao's problems weren't brought to light. Im personally a radical leftist, actually a communal anarchist, so im not a communist but im pretty sure back in 1972 I wouldve been.
Now after seeing Communism fail and examining why im over communism. Yet, I like a lot of it's ideas, I just take the ones that are great and forget the ones that are terrible. Which Godard did, his political beliefs now are different.
He has even denounced some his previous views, especially in this film. Also, its an art film. It even made fun of the fact it needed a story by adding one and then highlighting in a deadpan humor fashion again and again that it had one.
Anyway, I think its a period piece and psuedo-documentry, so I think it does have a story. See this if you like movies. It is entertaining, funny and interesting.
