Review of Touching the Void (2003) by Karen S — 08 Dec 2008
I love, love, love this film. What Joe Simpson went through in real life is far scarier than any horror film. When he is sat in the top of that crevasse it makes me feel sick (even though I know what happens). Both these men are heroes and legends.
I also love the fact that this film also studies the darker side of the psyche- what would you do if presented with that situation? Would you cut the rope? Did he do the right thing? Answers on a postcard, but in my opinion the answer is yes, on both counts. Joe was being reckless, which lead to him breaking his leg, which in turn, lead to Simon attempting to save his life (whilst risking his own...) I did have a good internal dialogue going on as I watched this!
Would recommened to anyone, climber, adventurer or average Joe. It's inspiring...
