Review of Touching the Void (2003) by Richard H — 11 Jul 2012
Extraordinary film based on actual events of mountain-climbing in 1985, attempted by two British mountaineers named Joe Simpson and Simon Yates. The documentary is based on the book of same name by Joe Simpson.
They decided to conquer Siula Grande in the Cordillera Huayhuash, in the Peruvian Andes about 6,344m high (20,813ft.). Joe gets tumbled down into Crevasse, after Simon cuts the rope, due to stormy weather, thinking he had died in such dreadful weather already, after holding onto rope for about an hour.
Simon cuts his journey and returns to base. However Joe struggles to drag himself out of Crevasse with his leg broken and other relative injuries. The story of these two is attached with the Legend of Mountain climbing stories.
Cutting of rope has been criticized by Climbing community in the world, but Joe has always defended Simon saying that he would have done the same in such condition. It is compelling documentary, that promises to bewilder you with its taunting direction from Kevin MacDonald.
