Review of Touch of Evil (1958) by Jeremy C — 25 Jun 2008
It gets no better than this. Yes, the opening shot is historical and amazing, but it's just the tip of the iceberg. There is stunning contrast of the blacks and whites of the cinematography, the eerie and unlikely perfection of late-50s Venice Beach as bordertown, Heston's shockingly palatable casting as a Mexican (!!), Janet Leigh never better, Orson at his vilest, hugest best, and an enticing supporting cast.
Dietrich as a sage-like madam (best line: "You a mess, honey."), Zsa Zsa as burlesque dancer, and the legendary Mercedes McCambridge is just plain terrifying. Some of Mancini's best (that is: edgiest) work, too.
