I wonder how many directors have thrown their hands in the air and quit when confronted by the virtuosity of Welles "touch of evil". It's staggeringly dense - and you don't need to be a film historian to spot the innovation and mastery in every single shot.
On top of that he puts in a crazily absorbing performance as a corrupt border town cop, a bullying, huffing, bulldozer of a man locked in battle with Charlton Hestons Mexican toreador-like good cop. The whole thing blew me away so much I had to immediately run into the street and proclaim it better than Citizen Kane.
