Review of Touch of Evil (1958) by Colm M — 12 Sep 2013
So dark. Darker than Hestons make up and surely it bravely stretches the boundaries of taste for the 1950's. The panning camera shot of the opening scene is so good you don't have to be a film buff to notice it and be impressed.
A ballsy, tense thriller that slowly builds towards an almost exciting climax. There's melodrama of course. It is 1958 after all and you can't help but love Denis Weavers totally over the top part as the jittery hotel manager.
. But in saying that there's nothing but impeccable acting and characterization from Welles. Its fascinating to watch Marlene Dietrichs small part as well. She's like a spectre from an older time even though its only 1958.
There was one big thing wrong with this movie for me and that's Charlton Heston. One, because he's browned up and two, because he's Charlton Heston.
