Review of Total Recall (2012) by Eden R — 26 Jul 2013
This is definitely a serviceable remake and starts quite boldly. The world building is a pastiche of Blade Runner and Robocop but there is a genuine effort here. In some ways the problem is that the film takes itself too seriously which means that in between action sequences there is no air to breath (1990 TR joke there :).
The acting is quite good across the board. Farrell is not bad and Beckinsale and Biel are gorgeous and energetic. Cranston overreaches as the baddie but all in all its a fairly decent cast for a B grade flick.
The problem is that the first film had Arnie's trademark humour - there was a lightness to the action not present here. Thats fine but if you are going down a more serious path then there has to be a different payoff and that does not happen here.
Worth watching just for the hover car sequences. Oh also, if you set a film in the future and The Colony is Australia then have one or two Australians in it. I can't throw a stone without hitting a Hemsworth brother so that should have been step one...
