Review of Total Recall (2012) by David C — 07 Feb 2014

A very slick looking film that insults the intelligence of anyone capable of thinking beyond a 3rd grade level. Well-acted and well shot, this poorly written and poorly conceived re-make of Paul Verhoeven's vastly superior 90's film is an utter waste of time to watch. It's a pity so many talented people worked on it, but it sets up a futuristic world that is so preposterous and impossible and even then, breaks/bends the rules of this world for the convenience of lazy writing.

For example, we're led to believe a massive humanoid drone army is about to be unleashed, and that each drone is not only capable of using firearms, but that they can also fight in close quarter hand-to-hand combat, YET, they can't hit out hero with a bullet, or even a punch, and they don't even seen networked to each other and have to rely on spoken human orders to do anything, and even then they always fail. Who built these things?

In the future, the scary thing isn't going to be which drones and what cars the government has.. its going to be that your life depends upon the network that they own. If you're speeding on the hover car freeway, they dont have to chase you in cars.. they get your plate number and shut your car down. This film ignores everything that makes the future scary. It should be recalled. Totally.
