Review of Total Eclipse (1995) by N B — 16 Apr 2008
Hmmmm what to say about this film? I didn't watch this for DiCaprio. I saw it for Thewlis and although this is not his best film, it is a good watch, especially if you;re perverted like me and just think seeing him kiss another bloke is sexy!!!
This movie shows how a relationship can bring out the best- and worst in people. Thewlis' Verlaine becomes so abusive with his wife but then becomes weak and pathetic in the rpesence of DiCaprio's presence. I think this film resembles Brokeback Mountain in a way that despite the rows/arguments/violence between one another, they can;t get enough of each other. E.G. When Verlaine leaves Rimbaud after Rimbaud insults him, it's Rimbaud who cried for him to come back and when they do meet up again three days, what should be a loving reunion turns into a physical fight (also reminds of the brilliant "Prick Up Your Ears": a fantastic film starring Gary Oldman).
I say give this film a try. It's a Marmite film: you're either going to love it or hate it.
