Review of Total Eclipse (1995) by Ungeziefer & Loving It! — 22 May 2008
Wonderful in ambition, slightly marred in the way of truth, this film is personal to me because it's about my personal hero, Arthur Rimbaud. I still feel another film is worth making, since Holland failed to really dive into the nightmarish experience of Africa that Rimbaud has described in his correspondence.
Nevertheless, the film is tragically beautiful, goregeous soundtrack and best of all: Two beyond oscar worthy performances by David Thwelis as Paul Verlaine and DiCaprio as the enigmatic Rimbaud. A must see for fans of Rimbaud or those interested in the madness of art.
"The only unbearable thing is that nothing is unbearable.".
