Review of Torque (2004) by Rhynal R — 02 May 2014
Decided to do this review as a tribute to the movie as it just recently came out on Blu-ray. In the early years of 2000-2005, car movies were blowing up with the Fast and Furious franchise and there were no real 'bike' movers aside from 'Biker boyz', which I will refuse to acknowledge.
Torque's basically the fast and furious equivalent but without a star studded cast. Because of this, a lot of the movie suffers but it's mostly not their fault as the script is horrible; with cliches everywhere and over-dramatizations of simple things.
The story is okay at best; it's logical and the audience can follow it, but no big surprises or plot twists. Ford and Shane were a C couple at best, but there were times when they were sweet and Martin Henderson brought a real charm to Ford as a character.
But make no mistake; the entire movie is a cliche and predictable. The real reason for people to watch this is the action. Now again, with this movie, it's important to consider timeline. In 2004 CGI was blowing up on screen with some of the best movies taking advantage of it.
A lot of CGi was used in this movie but there were some actual stunts that were pretty good, even if stunt doubles were abound. The action was good with it being fast paced and appropriate tense music during scenes.
Soundtrack, as mentioned before was pretty decent too, with Nickelback's 'Someday' being the theme song. Man, talk about flashback. I'm torn about this movie as me reviewing as a critic, it's roughly 5/10 because of uninteresting plot, bad performances and too much CGI.
But as that 15 year old that saw the movie 10 years ago when it now came out, I still remember screaming at how cool I thought the movie was and how awesome the action was. Torque has unfortunately not withstood the test of time as it was a bit of a pain to watch over in 2014 as I've been exposed to way better movies of the genre and better movies in general, but still.
I recommend giving it a re-watch for the nostalgia and to soothe that action-lovin' teenager inside you. I know I did. 4/10.
