Review of Torn Curtain (1966) by Grant S — 31 Aug 2014
Not anywhere near Alfred Hitchcock's best. Mildly interesting cold war espionage drama.
Starts reasonably well. Set up is good, and intriguing. Plot development is decent, and movie seems set up for a tense game of cat-and-mouse. Plot is not perfect, however: some inconsistencies and implausibilities.
However, from here things unravel to an extent. The final few scenes, while tense, just seem contrived. It feels like one long car chase.
Ends more with a whimper than a bang.
Good performances by Paul Newman and Julie Andrews in the lead roles. Andrew would have to be one of the rare non-blonde leading ladies in a Hitchcock film.
Mostly worth seeing for the sake of watching all Hitchcock movies, as I intend to do.
