Review of Torch Song Trilogy (1988) by Kenton M — 02 Apr 2008
"Torch Song" remains one of my desert island DVD discs - unsurprisingly still rated as one of the top three gay movies of all time... The only thing better than this film turns out to be Harvey's commentary on the DVD.
This was filmed at the same time (and also with New Line) as John Waters filming the original "Hairspray". It's a touching three act movie that may seem dated (the 'place cards' set it as taking place in the 70's and early 80's) but remains timeless in some of its themes. Sadly, some of these themes are internalised homophobia and gay hate crimes... but it's never handled with as much humour and pathos as here.
If you haven't seen it, prep up your tissue box. Anne Bancroft steals every scene she's in - and the VERY young Mathew Broderick looks not only HOT but somehow domestically accessible in his tracky dacks. ENJOY.
