Review of Topsy-Turvy (1999) by Sarah M — 21 Feb 2011
This is great for G&S enthusiasts, with all kinds of subtle references and inside jokes, but I don't think it's very accessible to anyone else. For one thing, there isn't much of a focus. It's not just about the lives of Gilbert or Sullivan, it's not just about Victorian theatre, it's not just about the inspiration/creation of The Mikado.
.. it's about a little bit of all of those, which means that it is long and meandering. If it had been a little more focused and shorter, I think it could have touched a wider audience.
