Review of Topaz (1969) by Paul T — 16 Aug 2009
A cliché-ridden, painfully schematic piece of film, that lacks a consistent structure as well as a strong leading protagonist. Only the master's touch for scenes of suspense and cinematic power - just think of the sequence in the hotel - save "Topaz" from being a total desaster.
Still, the message it delivers most strikingly is how outdated Hitchcock was at a time, when "New Hollywood" was about to rise.
