Review of Topaz (1969) by Ttt C — 28 Jan 2008
Even an average hitchcock movie is a good movie. that's what this movie is, a good movie. it has no big stars because he made soooo many movies with huge stars. the film is directed extremely well, carefully planned and executed.
the pacing is a little on the slow side but suppose to be a thriller but in a slow boiling kind of way, it never really achieves that though. the performances are fine, no one was horrble. the only grievance I have is with the horrible ending that was tacked on to the end of the film due to the horrific reaction of the test audience upon first viewing.
the ending that hitchcock chose to replace the other one is so anticlimactic, it really doesn't fit the film at all, it just screams that it was tacked on. I know what hitchcock originally wanted as the ending and that one is fine, it's a pretty good ending but more importantly it follows the tone of the film, but sadly I can't really take that ending into account because i'm reviewing the film that was released, the film that if I went into the video store the movie I would be renting, and that ending makes this film that could have been pretty darn good into only good.
