Review of Top Gun (1955) by Sean C — 07 Sep 2014
I liked the first half of the movie. It had a fun swagger about it mixed with great aerial scenes and solid acting. Then Goose dies and the movies does not how to handle "deep" emotions. The rest is flat and awkward.
They go from graduating to fighting. Hell, we never find out who they fight at the end. The enemy is not identified. All we know is the dreaded MiG-28 with its Darth Vader like pilots is here. Iceman wins the trophy but we never see why he is good, but hey "you can be my wingman anytime.
" The movie is flawed. We all know that. But I was surprised how much of it worked so in the end the film feels less like an 80s cheese fest and more like a missed opportunity.
