Review of Top Five (2014) by Greg B — 15 Dec 2014
"Top Five" is the latest cinematic endeavor from Chris Rock. In the film, Rock portrays a comedian and film star who is shadowed by a journalist (Rosario Dawson) who takes a profound interest in his story and what makes him tick during an outing in New York City.
Rock and Dawson come to develop a bond and Rock's character is able to experience a meaningful connection that perhaps he was lacking in his entourage. I found this film to be above average. There are many funny moments, and the script is rather clever.
The movie's first half is unremarkable and slow to start, but the film hits its sweet spot in the second half once we move past the slapstick and black comedy-like shenanigans. The first half tries too hard, but the second half feels less forced and redeems the first half.
Rock shows his tender side as an actor and actually shows a human side to his acting rather than his usual array of stand-up. The script is zany and off-beat, but as I said, this is a cleverly scripted film, and, in my opinion, well-cast ----------------------------------------------- B.
