Review of Top Five (2014) by Tal Z — 19 Dec 2014
Smart and witty, Top Five is Chris Rock's Woody Allen film that is better than many Woody Allen films. With a fantastic cast and enough hilarious moments balanced with poignant ones, Top Five feels more important than most comedies this year.
Rock may not be the best performer and some of the plot twists and turns don't fully work, but most of the script does and Rock surrounds himself with enough talented performers to really pull this film off.
The person who sells this film the most is Dawson, who is just perfect as a smart and capable journalist who is fleshed out enough to seem like a real person. I really enjoyed seeing different aspects of Rock's life and his culture put on screen, and it really feels like these actors have deep friendships with one another.
Every relationship feels lived in and real, and so does the film.
