Review of Top Five (2014) by Ezra S — 03 Jan 2015
Im a big fan of C Rock, from the very first film I saw him with the Wayan's brothers (I'm gonna git you sucka) I was hooked. In the beginning of this movie I started to get a little pissed, it was looking kind of ghetto and I expected more from Chris.
The more I watched it though I realized that there was a method to his madness and as the movie simmered the clarity became crystal clear and quite thought provoking, entertaining and of course funny.
The cast of characters in this film were finely cast, everyone fit their part to a T and delivered fantastic performances. There is a lot going on in this movie, far too much to take it all in the first time watching it.
I'm sure I'l uncover more when I see the film again. Ms Dawson is HOT as usual and they didn't edit out the scenes where she wets her sweet, sweet lips as they've done in other movies, I predict that Rock has left his wife for her and you can't blame him, once a Latina has you in her sights your history, whomever you did love you won't anymore once a chica wants you to be hers, you heard it here first.
The movie delivers nicely and you find yourself compiling your own list of top fives, mine are as follows: KK Rockwell and Sha Rock both (still counts as one) from the Funky Four, Rahiem of the Furious Five, Rakim, Run of Run Dmc and Chuck D of Public Enemy.
From there it continues: Slick Rick, KRS1,Keith Murray, Biggie Smalls, and Nice and Smooth (also counts as one) rounds out number ten. Honorable mention: Snoop Dog or Lion, whatever, Tupac, Rob Base, The Soul Sonic Force and the one hit wonder Craig Mack.
I suppose I'm telling my age with this list but since "I know I was there" I feel I'm somewhat of an unauthorized authority on the subject. It's unfortunate that some youngsters today who love HH but don't seek out it's forefathers and mothers think that today's HH is good, it's not, it really isn't.
Some performers today are okay like Future, Two Chains, Jay Z and Kanye before he went nuts and Nikki is okay, whatever happened to Akon anyway? but thats about it. Seek out and listen to the "oldies" kiddies and see what HH should sound like today, the difference is palpable.
Oh yeah, see this movie it's good, it's expose you to some of the genre i'm talking about, enjoy.
