Review of Top Five (2014) by Richard D — 04 Aug 2015
It's more of a dark comedy really, kinda like Birdman in a strange way.
The story takes place on the longest day I have ever seen on screen with a couple flashbacks. A comedian is struggling to stay relevant when he decides to do more serious work and nobody wants to take him seriously. His celebrity marriage is getting more attention than his passion project. All of that is an interesting satire on the entertainment business but I always felt that it could have gone further. The point of the film is to have an honest conversation with this celebrity, but I never really felt that it really got there. It does have some really funny moments, but it's not that consistent.
Surprisingly slow paced, when everything going on in the movie suggest that the exact opposite should be happening. Cinematography is sub par, even bad at a few points.
Filled with cameos of comedians and rap artists.
I like his stand up, but his film could use some improvement. It is a step up from his previous work, so it will be interesting to see what he does next.
