Review of Top Five (2014) by Lou A — 05 Aug 2015
It is quite unfair for a film such as this to be advertised as a comedy. In the aspect of comedic value, it fails completely, and never really tries that hard to begin with. Many scenes that are supposed to bring the humor really just bring awkwardness and disgust.
The film itself is mainly a romance, but is still rather dull even on that level. It also doesn't help that it conveys a lot of stereotypes for people of certain races, economic statuses, and sexualities.
Dawson is always a pleasure to watch, but she plays a self-detrimental bore, here. Rock's character also comes off as whiney and sometimes even arrogant. As a writer/director, he proves very little, except that he may have some narcissism-issues.
And the film's message about how one should stick with their true calling (by having a comedian delve into drama), is ironically proven within itself.
