Review of Top Five (2014) by Ray H — 27 Dec 2014
Disappointing. This movie is advertised as a comedy. But, it is not very funny. It deals with some serious relationship issues. It came across more as a drama with some comedic touches. Maybe it will have some appeal on the East and West coast, in large urban cities. And, it might appeal more to African Americans. There are some scenes with heavy black ethnic flourishes. These may have specific appeal to a sub-set audience.
I saw it in a theatre that was about half full. I did not hear anyone laugh or chuckle out loud during the entire movie. Rock is a talented stand up comic. But, this film role did not suit him.
Rosario Dawson is good as a reporter / love interest. She is following him around to write a story; but we rarely see her take any notes or record any interviews.
There are some very brief cameo roles by: Whoopi Goldberg (who mailed her performance in), Adam Sandler, and Jerry Seinfeld. They appear so briefly as to add almost nothing to the film.
It was a marginally OK trip to the flics. But, I would not recommend it.
