Review of Top Cat: The Movie (2011) by Martin Raynard C — 16 Jul 2012
After seeing a lot of bad reviews from people who hadn't seen the film, I decided to go and see Top Cat to review it myself.
I must admit I was quite disappointed... The film took a long time to get into, with the story taking almost half an hour to introduce all the characters and what they did.
For those who won't see the film because of the animation, I'm going to tell you now, that's not what made the film fall.
The animation, although hard to get used to, was an interesting thing that I haven't seen before in any other film.
Anyway, so after a long introduction I began to feel the story lifting off the rails, being a little mad and far-fetched (even for a cartoon). It took me a while to realise the story had started, since it wasn't exactly clear when it began after the intro.
The story line was quite loose and I didn't see the same humor and spirit H.B. used.
Despite all this, the voices were good (though each one spoke quite slowly, and some were a little more high-pitched or deeper than others) and the music was excellent in my personal view.
As the film drew to half an hour before its end I noticed young-ish kids beginning to run around the cinema in boredom and even parents begin to put their hands in their hands; I, too, was beginning to get bored.
The film took a while to end, with a lot of things still needing tied up at the point were they should have already done so, therefore the ending was sudden and I noticed some people looking surprised when the credits starting to roll.
One person behind me muttered, "Is that it?" But for either the reason of "Is that the end?" or "Is that the end? THANK GOD!" was unknown.
For those who are wondering about the female addition to T.C's gang, although important to the story-line I found her slightly annoying and considering she played an important role she definitely didn't have enough screen-time.
The film also over-used the slapstick comedy and regular cartoon comedy way too much, making me and others get bored of it quickly. I ended up mouthing the coming jokes to my brother or whispering, "Bet they're going to fall down now." Either I should consider becoming a fortune teller or the film was very generic.
Overall the film, in one word, was very boring.
