Review of Tootsie (1982) by Greg G — 26 Oct 2009
A classic from a decade replete with mediocrity in terms of cinematic distinctiveness, "Tootsie" did something original in terms of using the male lead as a transvestite; something that had been duplicated in lesser films such as "Ms.
Doubtfire." This is one of Dustin Hoffman's finer, more demanding roles and he nails it with the skill that has made him one of the finest performers in contemporary Hollywood. There is such a stark contrast between the male and female Hoffman's that it is really as though Hoffman is playing two completely different roles, and doing them both with equal nuance.
The supporting cast is a very formidable one, to say the least, Jessica Lange gives an Academy Award-winning performance, although I'd be tempted to ask what for, and Terri Garr also gives an Oscar-nominated performance as Hoffman's neurotic struggling actress girlfriend.
Kudos to Director Sidney Pollack (who also makes a cameo appearance in the film) for making something this outlandish and original. One of the better films of the 1980's.
