Review of Tootsie (1982) by Jim K — 06 Dec 2011
The perfect script and perfect cast come together to make one of the funniest movies ever. This is not a movie about cross-dressing, as much as a classic mistaken identity farce that was groundbreaking for its feminist revelations and message.
It was not about a straight man learning what it means to play a woman on TV, but rather about any man learning what it means to be a real woman in the world in general. Dustin Hoffman is at his impeccable best, but it's also the supporting performances by Jessica Lange (radiant), Bill Murray, Terry Garr, Charles Durning, Dabney Coleman, and director Sydney Pollack that make this movie a masterpiece.
