Review of Tomorrowland (2015) by Prentice S — 19 Sep 2015
"Tomorrowland" will always be one of those films that I expected to be so much better than it was. In a world where Disney turns out little else other than Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars films, "Tomorrowland" was supposed to be the one, great original concept movie.
Unfortunately, director Brad Bird set his sights far too high on this venture, failing to really pull the entire story together. George Clooney really didn't bring his natural charisma to set, but Hugh Laurie's villainous spin matched quite well with Britt Robertson's youthful optimism.
In the end, Laurie's David Nix delivered an award-winning speech about why the world should end, with people in our universe essentially demanding it, what with violent videogames mattering more on a global scale that the climate change that is destroying the planet.
Britt (Robertson) and Frank (Clooney) may succeed, but realistically, it felt far too safe and it didn't feel genuine, much like the final fight between Nix and the "good guys." Sadly, "Tomorrowland" will live in infamy for being another film whose reach extended beyond it's grasp.
