Review of Tomorrowland (2015) by Michael D — 20 Sep 2015
This is, at least partly, about the way the future was when I was growing up in the 1960s. The Seattle World's Fair, with the Space Needle and the Monorail, was supposed to be a glimpse into our future.
Disney's Tomorrowland was an extension of that idea. The future as nostalgia. The other part of the movie is about hope, and the belief that we can undo the damage we have done to this planet. The faith that we can fix what is broken.
These two things are connected, because the way the future looked in the 1960s was an optimistic future, where we had solved all the problems and could live without fear or want. This movie asks us to look at the future again with that optimism.
We still can, you know. We just have to believe.
