Review of Tomorrowland (2015) by Alfonso D — 23 Sep 2015

I had high hopes for this film, but unfortunatelly there were little tomorrowland: only a brief glimpse of this land of the future and a theoretical philosophical class about the self-fulfilled-prophecies concept, given by House MD at the end.

Let's be straight: when you sell a movie about the future, you have to show the people the future, a lot of future, since you create big expectations. That doesn't happen.

This movie has a lot of flaws. Let's start by the use of a cliche character as the main lead. Was it my imagination, or Casey looked alike a lot to Marty ( Michael J Fox in Back to the Future) or Maggie Peyton (Lindsay Lohan in "Herbie Full Loaded" ): geek, tech savvy, rebel spirit, cool vibe teen. I am pretty sure that most teens admire that kind of people but it is a hero too stereotypical.

In this matters, I like more the vision of Spielberg of creating dysfunctional heroes, with flaws, more humans, easier to relate with. Casey is too cool, too perfect, too "special" and it's hard to sympathize with that. Besides, my personal opinion is that she doesn't have the charism of Fox and Lohan in their movie roles, and that takes away a lot of charm to the movie.

Also there are big holes in the plot, like.. (SPOILERS ALERT, STOP READING FROM NOW ON) the present world was doomed, but why tomorrowland was in ruins when they finally arrived to it? Was not supposed TL to be a safe place? how was Frank's life in TL until he was deported? how that happened? and first and foremost: how TL started? Who created it?

Anyway, the movie was too ambitious and it fell short to cover all the angles, but you can rescue the production, and the message. The kids, both of them, stole the show, Clooney and Laurie had solid performances, and I liked the story of the wolves. Very valid for this times.
