Review of Tomorrowland (2015) by Chiek E — 30 Aug 2017
A preachy film by Brad Bird, a huge hero of mine whose Ratatouille and the Incredibles are amongst my favourite films of all time. Although not short of actions and wowing special effects, the story failed to impress me because I do not share Brad Birds vision of a future that is techno advanced, multiracial society devoid of strife, gleaming skyscrapers, electric highways and everyone zooming around in mid air.
Wonderful, yes but no realistic for me. Not even the presence of George Clooney could urge me to give this film beyond a 3 stars rating. While the earth undoubtedly is hurtling towards destruction accelerated by earthlings overpopulation and over consumption of resources, Brad Bird's vision of a future of gleaming space age, techno advance society will be populated by only those who receive the Tomorowland pin.
So only the select few who have high IQs, good looks and magnetic personalities would qualify. What impressed me most about this film was Hugh Laurie's brilliant acting in his British accent and his all too convincing conviction that humans are accelerating earth's demise and giving the T pins to the select privileged few and while leaving the bulk behind to endure earth's destruction seems too Adolf Huxley.
A more realistic and appealing Tomorrow land for me would be a huge reduction of earth's population, massive curtailment of consumption, huge reduction in electronic stuff and allowing mother earth to heal from the fatal wounds exacted on her by mankind.
But we know that won't happen because that dastard Robert Langdon would thwart the population reduction scheme in his flirt with Dante's inferno.
