Review of Tomorrow, When the War Began (2010) by Mike K — 24 Feb 2011
This really took me back to the the trips up the river that I used to take with my friends when we were around the age of the lead characters of the story. 'Tomorrow, When the War Began' is an excellent telling of Marsden's story, so good in fact, that I can't wait for the sequels.
It's well scripted, beautifully filmed, with top-notch, believable performances from the leads. When I get time, I'm going to have to read the books - which are literally prescribed reading in a lot of Australian high schools - no doubt the 'invasion' theme has given various pseudo-intellectual critics fuel to muse about ingrained racism, cultural biases, etc.
, but I don't buy it in regard to this. As implausible as the prospect of a land invasion of Australia is, it's handled well. I haven't seen 'Animal Kingdom' yet, but surely this must be a contender for the best Australian film so far this decade.
Thoroughly enjoyable.
