Review of Tomorrow, When the War Began (2010) by Roy Hector K — 02 Aug 2011
Another Australian production, the second straight one I've seen this week. This one is also pretty good. It's basically a "Red Dawn" type of movie. Teenagers, trendy music, it starts out pretty much like a typical teen movie. They go out for some camping, and then come back to find their country invaded and occupied by what seems like Chinese troops.
The movies' pace is uneven, slow at first but picks up around 20 minutes into it. However, despite that there seems to be a lot of interesting things onscreen to keep your occupied, whether it is the amazing vistas of the Australian outback, or the excellent dialogue and characterizations.
The acting is also pretty damn good, and a lot of thrills and spread throughout its entire length. Some good humor, too, like girls engaging in gossip during an operation while the enemy sneaks up on them.
If there's are flaw to the movie, its the fact that they make professional enemy soldier so ... unprofessional. Plus it just smacks of a bit too much escapist fantasy to see these kids with no training and experience whatsoever turn into effective guerilla fighters.
Still, very good entertainment, as long as you don't take it too seriously. Highly recommended.
Four stars.
