Review of Tomorrow, When the War Began (2010) by Justin R — 18 Aug 2011
Finally, an Australian movie that's enjoyable...
I wasn't expecting this to be fantastic. The trailer had given me the impression that the acting was going to let the film down, and it does in many places.
But apart from the acting, the film is really good and its amazing that it only cost $20,000,000 to make.
Compared to the $150 million dollar piece of poo that was "Australia", this film is what Australian movies should be like.
It didn't ram Australianism's down your throat relentlessly...
I mean there was the usual cliches...
Missy Higgins in the sound track... check.
Someone says 'crickey'... check.
Australian bush scenery.... check.
But apart from that, the action was fantastic and not overdone, but very interestingly done.
The story was good and it didn't rush to action scenes.
The only glaring problem I had was the ***SPOILER ALERT*** scene where the young religious girl shoots 4 soldiers. The power of that gun would have thrown her back off her feet and she wouldn't have hit any of them...
Also, why does the shock wave from giant explosions never burn anyone? They get thrown 10 feet in the air when a petrol tanker explodes but they have no burns? ???
But apart from those minor issues, I really do recommend this film, and I hope its successful and we see the sequel that it so obviously wants to have.
