Review of Tomorrow, When the War Began (2010) by Daniel G — 08 Jan 2012
The Twilight effect again - this teen series of novels from Australia from the nineties were apparently popular amongst the target demographic, all seven of them. The 20 million budget film adaptation from first time director Stuart Beattie (writer of the Pirates of the Caribbean series) finds us on very familiar territory indeed, stereotypical 2 dimensional characters and laughable plot points.
For a film that is supposed to be thriller, some set pieces pass without tension or excitement. Essentially Red Dawn without Charlie Sheen and more teen angst set against the fictional invasion of Australia by un-named asian aggressors.
That been said that its well put together and the production values are very slick and some of the FX are up there with Hollywood's best. Its commendable that a film like this has come out of the Australian film industry and hope that it's target audience reacted better than I did, so that they do make the planned 2 sequels.
