Review of Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) by Troy F — 05 Nov 2012
I like the villians plan, making two countrys thinking they've attack each other by minipulating the media, making it seem as if the chinese sunk a British naval vessel, but I can't say the same for the villians motivations which are broadcast rights, pretty ridiculous.
His plan was to provoke war between China and the United Kingdom, which would replace the Chinese government with one more supportive to Carver's plans of exclusive broadcast rights. How does that make any sense? I know Bond villians plans always are a bit of a stretch.
But this one was just too much. By the third act I became a bit uninterested and bored as it started to get a bit flat. Brosnan plays Bond better this time around, more confident and suave. More screen time from Judi Dench is welcomed and the Bond girls were good.
Paris played by Teri Hatcher being his past love brought out the more emotional side of Bond whereas Wai Lin a Chinese agent played by Michelle Yeoh holds her own, fighting off bad guys and bringing out the competition in Bond before they eventually team up.
The movie has probably one of my all time favourite bond pre-title sequence. I always like the ones that have nothing to do with the story and are just a mission he was on before the movie. It's designed to get you pumped and it does.
Also has one of my favourite title sequences. Better direction from Roger Spottiswoode and better acting from Pierce Brosnan. Thrilling stunts and action, particularly when he's handcuffed to Wai Lin.
But a much much weaker story.
