Review of Tomcats (2001) by Michael S — 08 Apr 2008
The plot is contrived and, what's funny about that is that it's just a 'teen sex comedy' with a crappy adult cast ought to sell it to adults. It doesn't work, particularly because so many other films have managed to forge such great films behind this kind of movie, whereas this one makes no attempt to do anything but tie one gross-out gag to another.
Sure, you laugh, you have no choice; when it's between laughing and cringing your way out of the room, eh, I guess you laugh. O'Connell isn't a capable leading man and all I could do is make jokes about Contact when Busey appeared.
Again, even when it's at its most humorous, it suffers because the characters don't compel sympathy and the whole story doesn't have some simultaneous story flying allow to maintain interest.
Even the O'Connell/Elizabeth relationship doesn't seem that special, except to contrast every other one in the film. Worth a late night, nothing-on-the-tube looksy, but be prepared to experience cheap laughs and far from a contributor to the genre.
