Review of Tomboy (2011) by Jake P — 23 Nov 2018
Tomboy brilliantly reflects what it's like to grow up as a trans man, and perfectly acknowledges the psychological and emotional damage that children experience when they're not allowed to be themselves.
His mother's abusive actions are also very true to the selfishness of parental figures when their child expresses transgender inclinations. The fact that audiences had to see the child non-consensually undressed in order to have his gender 'confirmed' by transphobic friends seemed unnecessary and painful, but when a trans movie is written and directed by cis people, I suppose you have to manage your expectations there.
It's still one of the best trans movies I've ever watched.
